The short answer
WeatherAPI.com accepts several location formats in q, while Weatherbit recommends coordinates for its daily endpoint. Compare forecast depth and production rights on the chosen tiers, then test your real regions rather than assuming equal coverage.
| Provider | A good reason to choose it | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| WeatherAPI.com | An app accepting city names, postal codes or coordinates and needing a compact location-and-forecast response. | Forecast length and historical access change by plan. Validate the requested horizon against the plan rather than the largest number mentioned in the documentation. |
| Weatherbit | An integration with a fixed daily forecast schema that may later need air-quality, agriculture or energy data. | The free tier is non-commercial and has a shorter daily horizon. Historical, hourly and specialist endpoints have separate plan requirements. |
Side-by-side differences
| Requirement | WeatherAPI.com | Weatherbit |
|---|---|---|
| Forecast interface | Dedicated forecast endpoint with a days parameter | Daily endpoint; hourly/minutely endpoints are separate |
| Historical workflow | History endpoint; lookback depends on plan | Historical endpoints and lookback depend on plan |
| Location input | City, postal code, coordinates and other q formats | Coordinates recommended; city/postal alternatives |
| Response shape | JSON or XML; location/current/forecast objects | A data array of daily forecast records |
| Production access | Call allowance and feature tier | Commercial license on paid plans |
| Cost driver | Monthly request allowance | Daily/RPS limits and historical request quota |
Pricing: make the units comparable
| Provider | Billing model | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| WeatherAPI.com | Monthly plans with call allowances | The pricing page lists a $7/month Starter plan with 3 million calls and a seven-day forecast; other capabilities remain plan-specific. Checked October 28, 2026. |
| Weatherbit | Subscriptions with daily and per-second limits | Compare daily request limits and separate historical quotas. Paid prices were not machine-readable in the reviewed pricing page, so no dollar estimate is asserted here. |
For 10,000 location-day lookups, record the requested variables and hourly/daily resolution first. A plan counting calls and a plan counting returned weather records can charge different amounts for the same HTTP request count.
For a buying decision, calculate total spend divided by accepted outputs at your expected volume. Keep free evaluation access, paid production access, annual commitments and overages separate. We have not measured a cost or speed winner for this pair.
What changes in the integration?

WeatherAPI.com: migration check
Resolve ambiguous city names before comparing results. Convert forecastday/hour objects and local timestamps to your application's canonical hourly schema.
Weatherbit: migration check
Check the definition of high/low versus max/min temperature and each daily window. Preserve Weatherbit condition codes only inside the provider adapter.
How to test them fairly
- Fix ten coordinates across your actual service area. Use the same UTC issue time, units and hourly window for every provider.
- Save the forecast before the event. Compare later against an agreed observation source; a successful HTTP response does not establish forecast accuracy.
- Check missing values, elevation, timezone boundaries and precipitation accumulation periods before calculating an error statistic.
- Measure p50/p95 request latency, throttling and billed units separately from forecast error. Repeat across several weather conditions.
- Confirm caching, attribution, redistribution and commercial-use terms for the exact plan. A keyless endpoint is not automatically a commercial entitlement.
Record the plan, request settings, time window and acceptance rules with every run. That makes a later result interpretable when a vendor changes a model, source set or pricing tier.
Prefer a common request format?
