When NewsAPI fits
A straightforward metadata-and-source-link integration where article discovery matters more than a full-text corpus.
Check before integrating
The Developer plan is development-only, including a restriction on staging/internal production. The content field is truncated; it is not a full-text license.
Provider endpoint reference
This is NewsAPI's documented interface. Its credentials and response format are separate from an All Them APIs account.
GET https://newsapi.org/v2/everything
Authentication: X-Api-Key header or apiKey parameter
Inputs: q, from/to, language, domains, page/pageSize; API key
Output: status, totalResults and articles with metadata, source URLs and truncated content.| Capability | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Search workflow | Keyword/Boolean queries and domain/source filters |
| Article body | Truncated content, not a complete article body |
| Archive access | Lookback depends on production plan |
| Pagination | page and pageSize |
| Production access | Paid production plan required |
| Cost driver | HTTP requests, regardless of returned result count |
Pricing model and production access
Production subscription plus request overages. Business is listed at $449/month with 250,000 requests and $0.0018 per extra request. Free Developer access is not production access. Checked October 28, 2026.
For 10,000 usable articles, track duplicate rate, results per page and paid units. A request returning ten truncated articles is not equivalent to one returning a hundred licensed full-text records. Include the production-plan minimum in the comparison.
Migration notes
Do not map truncated content to a field promising full text. Preserve source links and translate Boolean query operators before evaluating recall.
Keep provider-specific authentication and response mapping inside an adapter. Preserve source timestamps and identifiers so changing a provider does not silently change the meaning of stored records.
NewsAPI alternatives
| Alternative | When to evaluate it |
|---|---|
| NewsAPI vs GNews | A compact article-search integration that needs a documented step from delayed evaluation to real-time paid access. |
| NewsAPI vs NewsData.io | A news pipeline that explicitly separates recent collection, historical queries and specialist feeds. |
| NewsAPI vs NewsCatcher | Monitoring and analysis where duplicate handling, query validation and structured article enrichment are central requirements. |
| NewsAPI vs World News API | A filtered news application that can budget using a documented points-per-request and per-result model. |
| NewsAPI vs Event Registry | A research workflow that needs concepts and events as first-class objects, not just a list of matching article URLs. |
A fair evaluation
- Prepare a fixed set of entity names, ambiguous names, exact phrases and multilingual topics. Pin the publication window and record the retrieval time.
- Score a blinded sample for topic relevance and entity precision. Count unique stories separately from syndicated copies and repeated URLs.
- Measure publication-to-availability delay on a monitored source set. Article timestamps alone do not reveal when the provider indexed them.
- Check missing bodies, truncation, source URLs and archive cutoffs on the exact plan. Store metadata and hashes where article-storage rights are not established.
- Record requests, pagination, credits or points per usable article. Confirm publisher rights and permitted storage/redistribution independently of API access.
