The short answer
For metadata and source links, both provide direct article-search interfaces. GNews documents full content on paid plans; NewsAPI's Everything content is truncated. Compare production tiers and text requirements before comparing request quotas.
| Provider | A good reason to choose it | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| GNews | A compact article-search integration that needs a documented step from delayed evaluation to real-time paid access. | Free responses have delayed, truncated content and a shorter archive. GNews is a third-party service, not an official Google API; publisher rights still apply. |
| NewsAPI | A straightforward metadata-and-source-link integration where article discovery matters more than a full-text corpus. | The Developer plan is development-only, including a restriction on staging/internal production. The content field is truncated; it is not a full-text license. |
Side-by-side differences
| Requirement | GNews | NewsAPI |
|---|---|---|
| Search workflow | Keyword search and a separate top-headlines endpoint | Keyword/Boolean queries and domain/source filters |
| Article body | Truncated on Free; full content listed on paid tiers | Truncated content, not a complete article body |
| Archive access | Free recent window; paid archive since 2020 | Lookback depends on production plan |
| Pagination | Plan-dependent result limits; check search endpoint pagination | page and pageSize |
| Production access | Plan-dependent freshness and production entitlement | Paid production plan required |
| Cost driver | Requests per day and articles per request | HTTP requests, regardless of returned result count |
Pricing: make the units comparable
| Provider | Billing model | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GNews | Daily request quotas and results-per-request tiers | The official plan table separates daily calls, page size, archive and full content. Compare the same paid tier rather than treating free delayed results as equivalent. |
| NewsAPI | Production subscription plus request overages | Business is listed at $449/month with 250,000 requests and $0.0018 per extra request. Free Developer access is not production access. Checked October 28, 2026. |
For 10,000 usable articles, track duplicate rate, results per page and paid units. A request returning ten truncated articles is not equivalent to one returning a hundred licensed full-text records. Include the production-plan minimum in the comparison.
For a buying decision, calculate total spend divided by accepted outputs at your expected volume. Keep free evaluation access, paid production access, annual commitments and overages separate. We have not measured a cost or speed winner for this pair.
What changes in the integration?
| GNews | NewsAPI | |
|---|---|---|
| Method and URL | GET https://gnews.io/api/v4/search | GET https://newsapi.org/v2/everything |
| Authentication | API key in apikey | X-Api-Key header or apiKey parameter |
| Inputs | q, lang, country, max, from/to and apikey | q, from/to, language, domains, page/pageSize; API key |
| Output | totalArticles and articles with title, source, URL, timestamps and plan-dependent content. | status, totalResults and articles with metadata, source URLs and truncated content. |
GNews: migration check
Retest date bounds and query operators. A different maximum article count per request can change both cost and the completeness of your collection.
NewsAPI: migration check
Do not map truncated content to a field promising full text. Preserve source links and translate Boolean query operators before evaluating recall.
How to test them fairly
- Prepare a fixed set of entity names, ambiguous names, exact phrases and multilingual topics. Pin the publication window and record the retrieval time.
- Score a blinded sample for topic relevance and entity precision. Count unique stories separately from syndicated copies and repeated URLs.
- Measure publication-to-availability delay on a monitored source set. Article timestamps alone do not reveal when the provider indexed them.
- Check missing bodies, truncation, source URLs and archive cutoffs on the exact plan. Store metadata and hashes where article-storage rights are not established.
- Record requests, pagination, credits or points per usable article. Confirm publisher rights and permitted storage/redistribution independently of API access.
Record the plan, request settings, time window and acceptance rules with every run. That makes a later result interpretable when a vendor changes a model, source set or pricing tier.
