Event Registry vs GNews: API differences, pricing and integration

Compare Event Registry and GNews for news APIs: output, access requirements, billing units and the work needed to switch.

The short answer

GNews is a direct starting point for keyword-based article search. Event Registry is more relevant when multilingual concepts or grouped events define the task. Include entity disambiguation work in the integration estimate.

Choose by the task you need to complete
ProviderA good reason to choose itImportant caveat
Event RegistryA research workflow that needs concepts and events as first-class objects, not just a list of matching article URLs.NewsAPI.ai/Event Registry is a different service from newsapi.org. Resolve concepts and distinguish articles from events before comparing quotas or result counts.
GNewsA compact article-search integration that needs a documented step from delayed evaluation to real-time paid access.Free responses have delayed, truncated content and a shorter archive. GNews is a third-party service, not an official Google API; publisher rights still apply.

Billing model and plan checks
ProviderBilling modelWhat to check
Event RegistryPlan-specific query and data accessCheck the current plan against the requested article/event result types and archive. No universal token-to-article exchange rate is assumed.
GNewsDaily request quotas and results-per-request tiersThe official plan table separates daily calls, page size, archive and full content. Compare the same paid tier rather than treating free delayed results as equivalent.

For 10,000 usable articles, track duplicate rate, results per page and paid units. A request returning ten truncated articles is not equivalent to one returning a hundred licensed full-text records. Include the production-plan minimum in the comparison.

For a buying decision, calculate total spend divided by accepted outputs at your expected volume. Keep free evaluation access, paid production access, annual commitments and overages separate. We have not measured a cost or speed winner for this pair.

Event Registry: migration check

Concept URIs are provider identifiers, not plain keyword strings. Keep event grouping separate from article deduplication and re-resolve entities when moving to a different service.

GNews: migration check

Retest date bounds and query operators. A different maximum article count per request can change both cost and the completeness of your collection.

How to test them fairly

  1. Prepare a fixed set of entity names, ambiguous names, exact phrases and multilingual topics. Pin the publication window and record the retrieval time.
  2. Score a blinded sample for topic relevance and entity precision. Count unique stories separately from syndicated copies and repeated URLs.
  3. Measure publication-to-availability delay on a monitored source set. Article timestamps alone do not reveal when the provider indexed them.
  4. Check missing bodies, truncation, source URLs and archive cutoffs on the exact plan. Store metadata and hashes where article-storage rights are not established.
  5. Record requests, pagination, credits or points per usable article. Confirm publisher rights and permitted storage/redistribution independently of API access.

Record the plan, request settings, time window and acceptance rules with every run. That makes a later result interpretable when a vendor changes a model, source set or pricing tier.
