Tavily vs Brave Search API: credits, results and context

Compare Tavily's depth-based credits with Brave's Web Search and LLM Context surfaces. Published documentation, not an invented head-to-head score.

Which API fits the job?

A plain web result and an excerpt prepared for an LLM may require different follow-up work. Pick the output contract first, then compare the cost of completing the same task. Neither vendor has an All Them APIs retrieval score in the current fixture set.

When to consider Tavily

Consider Tavily when you want Search and Extract in the same workflow and can control credit use through depth and optional fields. Put a limit on how often an agent can request a deeper search.

When to consider Brave

Consider Brave when you want to evaluate Web Search and LLM Context against your own source requirements. Do not include its separate Answers product in a raw-retrieval price comparison.

What is measured and what is documented?

This page compares checked documentation and product contracts. We have not completed a matched All Them APIs run for this pair and assign no synthetic winner or composite score.

External evaluations can help choose a first configuration, but they use different models, topics, result limits and cost definitions. Review the source register before importing a ranking into your own decision.

Prices are published USD list rates or explicitly labeled credit calculations, not observed costs from a new test. Extra results, content options, model tokens, account limits and minimum commitments can change the total. Check the linked source for the exact configuration.

A useful evaluation before switching

  1. Hold the result cap and geography constant and inspect the exact sources returned.
  2. Run one source-only trial and one workflow that fetches more content. The second can reveal costs hidden by the first.
  3. Compare payload size and useful citations before calling one endpoint more agent-friendly. A larger excerpt is not automatically better evidence.

Keep the same acceptance criteria across providers and save failures as failures. Avoid changing the target source, query or score threshold after seeing which vendor wins. Measure both useful evidence and the total workflow needed to obtain it.
