Creator discovery APIs: build a YouTube shortlist you can explain
All Them APIs
Independent API research
A creator discovery API can find channels that match a topic. It cannot tell you that their audience will buy your product. That second claim needs evidence a public search result does not contain.
Start with a narrower task: find channels that have recently published relevant work, preserve the examples and build a shortlist a person can review. YouTube's official Data API is a useful place to define that workflow before adding cross-platform vendors.
Discover content, then resolve the channel
The YouTube Search API returns matching videos, channels or playlists depending on the request. A search result is not a full channel or video record. Resolve the resource IDs through the appropriate API before treating the row as complete.
Searching for relevant videos can find a specialist whose channel description never uses your exact niche phrase. Deduplicate on channel ID, not display name, before deciding what to inspect next.
Search.list: find videos or channels for approved topic queries
Channels.list: retrieve channel details and the uploads playlist reference
PlaylistItems.list: collect a bounded sample from the uploads playlist
Videos.list: retrieve metadata and available statistics for those video IDs
Channels.list, PlaylistItems.list and Videos.list have separate parameters and response shapes. Follow pagination tokens and the current project quota rather than assuming one search returned the full market.
Define a comparable sample
For an initial implementation, inspect at most twenty relevant recent uploads per channel. That cap is an example workload control, not a recommended statistical sample size.
Keep publication time, format, duration and observation time. A new upload has had less time to accumulate views. Shorts, livestreams and long-form tutorials can attract different patterns of engagement. Do not compare them as if every view had the same context.
If you calculate a median view count, retain the sample's video IDs and exclusions. A median over the last few available uploads is a description of that sample, not a forecast or a sponsorship price.
Make missing metrics visible
| Observation | Reasonable interpretation | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Several relevant videos | The creator has covered the topic | Their entire audience belongs to the niche |
| Available views, likes and comments | Public engagement at observation time | Conversions, unique viewers or authentic audience composition |
| Channel country field | Channel metadata, when supplied | Where viewers live |
| Subscriber count | A reported channel metric | Expected reach of the next campaign |
| Missing likes or comments | The metric is unavailable | Zero engagement |
Do not infer audience demographics from a creator's name, appearance or location. Do not attempt to reveal a hidden business email. Use a contact route the creator intentionally provides or an approved marketplace relationship.
Give the agent a research-only prompt
Find YouTube channels covering the approved niche with the Data API.
Use three approved queries, deduplicate channel IDs and honor the quota cap.
For each channel, inspect a bounded set of relevant recent uploads.
Return the source video URLs, observation time and sample definition.
Keep Shorts, streams and long-form video comparisons separate.
Do not infer demographics, fabricate missing metrics or send messages.
Explain why each channel is worth human review using actual content examples.
Enforce those caps in code. A search page is a billable or quota-consuming unit in many services; a prompt that says "find more" can change the workload quickly.
Add other platforms only when the task needs them
TikTok and Instagram discovery have different official access rules and third-party data contracts. An operation that works for your own connected account is not automatically a public creator-search API.
Our social API references separate platforms and documented tasks. Use them to check the input and coverage boundary before adding a supplier. Do not merge profile statistics across platforms as if they were one audience measure.
The useful output is a short, source-backed list with a clear research reason for each creator. Pair it with the review-only outreach workflow only after choosing an appropriate contact route and approval process.
